So, "created by the literati" does not necessarily contradict Tarot fitting in with "the very worst (or most honest?) human conduct". I don't think I linked this here but one of the articles I did concerned what awful people we celebrate by showing more than a passing interest in the elites who made the first Tarots. So here if you're interested.

But I was just thinking of Moakley's premise, and also of the proliferation and variations on the triumphal themes that were employed by elites to achieve various political and social ends. It isn't like they were locked up in their castles never venturing forth to be muddied by the people. Well, OK, it was like that for some of them, but I think we must remember these cardboard images are just suggestions of very full human contexts our Tarot predecessors inhabited.

Thanks for your forwards.
