Le Tarot- Andrea Vitali's new site

Andrea Vitali's new site "Le Tarot" is up and it is BEAUTIFUL.
http://www.letarot.it/

Not only that, it also contains a wealth of information on Tarot, especially Andrea's amazing Iconological Essays.

This is a real gift to Tarot History buffs. Thank you Andrea!

(It's available in Italian and English, choose in the upper right hand corner of the screen)

I'd love to use these as a starting point for a study of the trumps. If anyone else is interested, we could start some threads for discussion in the Main Rooms?

The site is really excellent. Looking at some of the essays, I have particularly appreciated the images of an hanged man (and an hanged woman!) from ancient dishes.

The horoscope illustrations from Fanti "Triompho di Fortuna" (1527) are also very interesting.

Since I am currently reading some astrological stuff, I find fascinating, although uncommon, the interpretation of "La maison de Dieu" as the ninth astrological house.

Well, the book is of 1556 ... but it is declared, that it is of de Meung, who is much earlier. It was tried to interprete this as a publisher trick.
But there are indications, that older manuscripts existed, a least already in 15th century. Likely the whole is connected to older Geomancy.

Then there is the partly archaelogical finding, that the Dodechedrons were in high esteem in celtic time and in celtic regions, so maybe it served as a tool of the druids, also with connections to astrology (as seen occasionally by inscriptions). So the idea, that something was "very old" (but possibly mixed with more modern ideas) in 1556 must not be totally wrong.

There were probably lots of old lotbooks and lotbook systems already in 14th century, often of low quality with dubious background.
For the expression Maison dieux ... probably an expression of Geomancy.

The Ninth House

I would say that, in this context, the expression "Maison de Dieu" is of an astrological origin. Western geomancy was largely "hybridated" with astrology.

For instance, this list of the names of the astrological houses (loci) is from Julius Firmicus Maternus (IV century AC):
"vita, spes, Dea vel fratres, parentes, filii, valitudo, coniunx, mors, Deus, medium caelum, Bonus daemon, Malus daemon."
1. life, 2. hope. 3. Goddess or brothers, 4. parents, 5. children, 6. health, 7. consort, 8. death, 9. God, 10. mid-heaven, 11. Good daemon, 12. Evil daemon

In the same text, the ninth house is also defined as "dei Solis locus" (the house of the Sun god).

Gratulations, that is early (God in the 9th house, common would be "religion" in astrological definitions. ) ... however, it has not all the criteria of the list of 1556. Anyway, an interesting idea, that the house of the sun-god meets the darkest month (December) - likely following the logic, that it is dark, cause the sun god is "at home" and not on his common journey.

The list of 1556 has an orienttion towards the directions (East, South, West, North) ... this seems to be inspired by geomancy in it's square form.
